Grow Wild Launch! A Book Walk for Adults + Kids at Finnriver Farm & Cidery

May 16, 2021 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm Chimacum, Washington

A biomechanist’s newest book about the essentialness of movement just can’t be celebrated sitting down!

WHEN: Sunday, May 16, 2021, Drop in to walk between 12:00 and 5:00PM

Washington author Katy Bowman’s Grow Wild: The Whole Child, Whole Family, Nature-Rich Guide to Moving More is over 400 pages and one mile long. She is bringing her new book to life in the form of a one-day, dynamic celebration: the first ever “book walk” designed for adults and kids alike.

Grow Wild: The Whole-Child, Whole-Family, Nature-Rich Guide to Moving More will be spread out over the gorgeous Finnriver Farm & Cidery in Chimacum, Washington. You (and your crew) can sip on-tap beverages—organic cider and kombucha—and enjoy up to a mile-long walk as you take in the entire book laid out in signs along a path.

Katy will be there to do all the book-launchy things—bring your copy of the book to have it signed!—and there will be a book scavenger hunt set up for the kiddos to keep them engaged along the way.

Finnriver is a 50-acre working farm and cidery and they have welcomed us to host this walking event around their organic orchard. They will have some food (cookies and snackboxes) available for pre-order and pick-up at the event—details will be provided closer to the event).

Those of you interested in sitting down in their Cider Garden for food or drink before or after your walk will need to follow the procedures for their regular customers and Covid protocols, which entails going to their front entry and potentially waiting for a table. If you would like to bring your own picnic you may do so and there will be space on the grassy lawn for folks to eat and enjoy with safe spacing.

Please note: NO PETS, NO SMOKING, NO OUTSIDE ALCOHOL permitted on the farm.

Connect to the book, land, your body, and your community all at the same time. Stack your life!

HOW DOES A BOOK WALK WORK?

The pages of the book are posted on numbered signs spaced every 20 feet, so as you stroll you can browse the photos and text. There are 200 signs, which makes this book walk almost a full mile. It’s likely some will want to spend more time at each sign and some will want to move along faster; you are encouraged  to communicate with each other about passing by and how long you’ll be looking at a sign—there’s plenty of space for everyone to adjust their positioning so they can keep six feet apart!

WHAT IS THE PATH LIKE?

Finnriver is a working farm and the land is lumpy-bumpy as you wind around and through the space. Be prepared for uneven walking surfaces and if you or a group member will be rolling the path, a trail-ready wheelchair is recommended.

The signs are about hip height so expect to use forward bends, squats, and leans to dig deep into the pages that spark your interest. Note our “bucket-as-a-seat” solution below in case you think this would enhance your dynamic celebration experience!

DO I HAVE TO WALK THE ENTIRE MILE?

The path is designed so that you can easily hop out after the first third of a mile and be near the start.

IS THERE SEATING ALONG THE WAY?

There is not, but we’ll have on hand a handful of sanitized 5-gallon buckets that are lightweight to carry along with you and can be flipped over for a quick place to sit, if you or someone in your group might want a rest!

ABOUT TICKETS

This event is free, but space is limited and tickets required. One ticket is sufficient for your household/group.
